The challenges of providing meals for the elderly
Delivering meals for the elderly is a major challenge.
For many, MAP prepacking is a welcome alternative
giving them the choice to eat what they want
when they want it.
With MAP prepacking, the food is packaged in topsealed
portion packaging and refrigerated. The food
can keep for up to sixteen days, and the senior
citizens are able to heat the food in their oven or
microwave when it suits them best.
Pick-and-choose
In several places, senior citizens have been
supplied with menus listing a variety of starters,
main courses and desserts. This gives them the
opportunity to choose the meals which suit them
best, and to have starters or desserts delivered
depending on how they feel. MAP prepacking
preserves food quality and vitamins, ensuring
that each person has a healthy diet.
In addition to being able to choose between many
different dishes, it is easier for the food supplier
to tailor the dishes to meet the needs of people
with diabetes allergies or other conditions, people
who find it difficult to chew their food or people
with other dietary needs. This means that the
requirements and wishes of almost everyone can
be met.
Environment wins
Meals on wheels usually requires daily deliveries of
hot food for those people with restricted mobility.
However in many cases that is not needed and
there is a high impact on the environment in terms
of CO2 emissions. With MAP prepacked packaging,
deliveries need only take place once a week as the
shelf-life is longer and the senior citizens can heat
the food when they want to eat. At the same time,
the MAP solution saves precious water as there is
no washing up.
Faerch Plast has customers who have seen their
water consumption fall by 50 per cent. Moreover,
the packaging is produced from a monomaterial
where more than 99 per cent of the raw materials
are used or reused in production and which, after
use, can be recycled to produce new energy. This
also helps to protect the environment.
Switching to PET MAP prepacking can help to solve
the challenges facing providers of meals to the
elderly. It can benefit the environment
and the bottom line.
